A simple old-fashioned gravy

Recipe Creator: Jennifer Walsh

There are some recipes that earn their place in the kitchen simply because they make an ordinary meal feel complete, and a good onion gravy is one of them.

This is the sort of gravy I want alongside bangers and mash—rich, savoury and glossy, with plenty of soft onions running through it. There is nothing complicated about the ingredients, but the flavour comes from giving the onions enough time to slowly soften and caramelise before building the gravy around them.

I use brown onions, butter, beef stock and Worcestershire sauce, with a little flour to bring everything together. The result is a proper homemade gravy with a deep savoury flavour and just enough natural sweetness from the onions.

It is particularly lovely over sausages and creamy mashed potatoes, but it is just as useful alongside rissoles, roast meats or a simple Sunday dinner.

What I like most about recipes like this is that they remind me how much can be made from a handful of basic ingredients. No packet mix needed—just a saucepan, a little patience and ingredients most of us already keep in the kitchen.

A good onion gravy is one of those simple recipes worth keeping close. It turns everyday meals into something a little more comforting, whether it’s spooned over rissoles, roast beef, meatloaf, shepherd’s pie, cottage pie, roast chicken, pork chops or a tray of roasted vegetables.

Here are some lovely meals you can serve Traditional Onion Gravy with:

I also love it alongside

  • creamy mashed potato

  • buttery peas & carrots

  • beef steak

or anything that benefits from a generous spoonful of rich, savoury gravy.

Healthy Habit:

I personally love serving this onion gravy with burgers when I’m having dinner with my family and choose to skip the bread. Spooned generously over the burger patty, it adds so much richness and flavour that I never feel as though I’m missing the bun at all.

It’s humble, uncomplicated home cooking, but that is exactly why it works so well. A few basic ingredients, cooked slowly and properly, can bring so much flavour to the table.

If you use this recipe, I'd love to hear all about it, please leave a comment below.
