Moroccan cooking is known for its beautiful layering of warm, earthy and aromatic spices. There isn’t a single Moroccan seasoning recipe, blends can vary from family to family and from one spice merchant to another, however spices such as cumin, coriander, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and pepper are commonly used throughout Moroccan cooking.

This homemade Moroccan Seasoning is my simple way of keeping those exquisite flavours ready to use in the pantry. I love having a jar made up, because it turns something as simple as roast vegetables, chicken or potatoes into a much more interesting meal, without having to reach for half a dozen single spice jars every time.

It is especially lovely with roast vegetables, chicken, lamb, couscous, rice, soups, stews and marinades. Start with a small amount, taste as you cook, and build the flavour from there.

I haven’t included salt in this seasoning blend, as the amount needed can vary from recipe to recipe. Add salt separately when cooking and adjust it to suit your own taste and the dish you’re preparing.

One of the things I’m learning as I cook more from scratch is how useful homemade seasoning blends are. They take only a few minutes to prepare, yet make everyday cooking much easier. Instead of buying another pre-mixed packet, I can see exactly what has gone into the jar and adjust the seasoning to suit the meal I’m making.

Today I Learned

Moroccan spice blends don’t follow one universal recipe. Traditionally, combinations vary between households, regions and spice merchants, which means a homemade blend can be adjusted while still drawing on the warm, aromatic flavours associated with Moroccan cooking.

And I think “Home Cooking Made Easier” is particularly fitting for this one, because that is genuinely what keeping homemade seasoning mixes in the cupboard is all about.

I hope you love this blend just as much as I do.

Happy Cooking,

I've always bought my Moroccan seasoning, but when I noticed this recipe I had to try it, and I enjoyed mixing all the spices and the feeling of being in control of what went into the blend, I used it to make your Moroccan Beef Brisket, it was a hit at my house, thank you 🙏
